The NICU is a 6-bed-unit located on the northeast of the second floor near the labor and delivery unit. It has modern and bright surroundings.

Purpose of service:

NICU services aim at:

o Promoting a healthy environment that enhances family attachment.

o Providing an environment conducive to promoting the wellbeing of neonates and their families.

o Providing a safe and secure environment for staff / patients and their families.

o Promoting health education.

o Promoting good communication within the multidisciplinary team.

Admission criteria:

NICU admits neonates from 0 day to 30 days of age who:

o Have experienced difficult labor and/or delivery.

o Require continuous cardiopulmonary monitoring.

o Require monitoring of complete vital signs at a minimum of every 4 hours.

o Have condition of abnormal vital signs, hematology, or chemistry to cause endangerment.

o Are cyanotic.

o Have anomalies, severe congenital heart disease.

o Have undergone resuscitation or laryngoscopy.

o Are in respiratory distress.

o Have erythroblastic anemia.

o Are unstable of diabetic mothers.

o Have possible sepsis or at risk for sepsis.

o Have neurological distress (seizures, lethargy, hydrocephalus).

o Exhibit drug withdrawal.

o Have metabolic distress( acidosis, hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency)

o Have gastrointestinal abnormalities.

Inability to establish feeding, voiding, stooling within 24 hrs.
Unstable blood sugar.
Presence of congenital anomalies (unable to feed, void, or stool within the first 24 hours, cleft lip/palate).
Significant vomiting or abdominal distention requiring NPO status with IV fluid administration.

o Are premature or have significant intrauterine growth retardation.

Have Condition requiring surgery within 48 hours after birth
